Reaching Out

From the time that Cornerstone Medical Recruiting was founded, our goal has been to help medical institutions fill their staffing needs, and to help quality medical professionals find careers at medical facilities. But even more importantly, one of the top goals of Cornerstone Medical Recruiting has always been to be a make a positive difference in the lives of the people that we work with. Cornerstone Medical Recruiting has partnered with a ministry called The Cries of a Child to help with the missions efforts in the country of Burundi, Africa. Cornerstone has committed to funding the building of a medical clinic in Burundi to address the severe shortage of quality medical care in the impoverished African country. Because of the relationships that Cornerstone builds with medical professionals, we will be able to assist in the staffing of the medical clinic with quality mission minded medical professionals, once the construction of the medical clinic is complete.

Burundi (pronounced [buˈɾundi]), officially the Republic of Burundi, is a landlocked country in the Great Lakes region of Eastern Africa bordered by Rwanda to the north, Tanzania to the east and south, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the west. Its size is just under 28,000 km² with an estimated population of over 10,000,000. Its capital is Bujumbura. Although the country is landlocked, much of the southwestern border is adjacent to Lake Tanganyika.

Burundi is one of the ten poorest countries in the world. It has one of the lowest per capita GDP of any nation in the world. Burundi has a low gross domestic product largely due to civil wars, corruption, poor access to education, and the effects of HIV/AIDS.

The assassination of the democratically elected president in October 1993 marked the beginning of an ongoing conflict in Burundi that has claimed more than 300,000 lives and displaced 1.3 million people at its peak. In January 2006, U.N. agencies estimated that approximately 117,000 Burundians remained displaced, living in camps throughout the country, and an additional 448,000 Burundians lived as refugees, primarily in neighboring Tanzania. The quality of life has continued to deteriorate as the conflict has destroyed infrastructure, limited access to basic services, and reduced agricultural output.

In the Bible in Matthew 25:40, it says that whatever you’ve done to the least of these you’ve done to me, refering to Jesus. It seems that we can so often get in our Christian circles and miss the reason that we are here. We also forget that there is a hope tucked away in you and me, and we forget that we are not here for us, but for those who have no hope. Together, we can make a difference.
