An ever increasing amount of employers are Googling, researching Facebook profiles, and fact- checking LinkedIn profiles to see what kind of information they can garner. Some of the ways that employers are using social media to screen potential candidates include looking for  provocative or vulgar photos,  checking communication skills, and validating resume provided information, just  to name a few.  Reppler, a social media monitoring service designed to help users manage their online image across different social networks, recently conducted a study to determine to what percentage of recruiters and hiring managers visit a potential candidate’s social media profile as part of the screening process. What Reppler found in the study was that more than 90% of recruiters and hiring managers have visited a potential candidate’s profile on a social network as part of the screening process. And a whopping 69% of recruiters have rejected a candidate based on content found on his or her social networking profiles. It’s not all bad news, however.  Nearly 68% of recruiters and hiring managers have hired a candidate based on his or her admirable presence on those networks.

 Like criminal background checks and drug tests, the social media check is quickly becoming an automatic part of the hiring process. It should go without saying that what is written on the web stays on the web. Once you post a status update or photo on the web, you are an open book for anyone searching for you, including prospective employers. While it doesn’t seem fair an employer may judge you based on your online profiles, it’s a fact that they are watching. Before you apply for your next job, you may want to take some time to take stock of what a potential employer may find out about you online. If there is anything in any of your social network profiles that you would not feel comfortable about anyone and everyone seeing, or knowing, it is best to remove it.

• The top reason a candidate is rejected after screening their social networks is because they lied about their qualifications
• The top reason a candidate is hired after screening their social networks is they gave a positive impression of their personality and organizational fit

Potential employers check profiles for information that will help determine their decision on a future employee. While searching, they check for both positive and negative content that is posted on the profile. This content will either lead to rejection or result in the candidate being hired.The most popular reasons for rejection were linked to inappropriate photos or comments, posted content with drinking, posted content with the usage of drugs, negative comments about previous employers, poor communication skills, discriminatory comments, false qualifications, and sharing confidential information from a previous employer.

In conclusion, simply be aware that if you are seeking a new job, you need to take ownership of your image and how you portray yourself online. Take some time to Google your name online just to see what pops up about yourself. You may be surprised what is available for the public to see. Embrace social media not just for the added connectivity, communication and ability to readily share, but also as an opportunity to control the message you are sending out about yourself to current employers and to prospective employers.” It’s possible for you to use your social media pages to communicate with friends and relatives while maintaining a clean, respectable image. The best advice regarding questionable photographs and comments that you may be considering making public is when in doubt, don’t post it. Why jeopardize your chances of landing the job that you really want all because you have some ill advised content on one of your social media profiles? The quality of life has continued to deteriorate as the conflict has destroyed infrastructure, limited access to basic services, and reduced agricultural output.
